More Than Cleansing
Wudu (ablution) is often perceived as a hygiene practice, but in Islamic theology, it is a spiritual transformation. It washes away minor sins committed by the limbs. As the water involves the hands, mouth, face, and feet, the sins associated with these parts are forgiven, dripping away with the water.
The Sunnah Method
- Niyyah (Intention): The heart must intend to purify oneself for the sake of Allah.
- The Hands: Washing the hands three times, ensuring water reaches between fingers.
- The Mouth & Nose: Rinsing the mouth and sniffing water into the nose cleanses the passages of speech and breath.
- The Face: Washing the face illuminates the believer on the Day of Judgment.
- The Arms: Washing arms up to the elbows, starting with the right.
- The Head: Wiping the head (Masah) symbolizes submission of the intellect.
- The Feet: Washing feet up to the ankles, the foundation of our standing in prayer.
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "He who performs Wudu strictly according to the Sunnah... the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him." (Muslim)
