The Month of Quran
Ramadan is inextricably linked to the Quran. It was in this month that the revelation began in the Cave of Hira. Muslims replicate this connection by reciting the entire Quran in Taraweeh prayers, reconnecting with the divine message.
The Physiology of Fasting
Fasting (Sawm) is a shield. By denying the body its basic needs—food, drink, and intimacy—during daylight hours, the soul learns to deny its lower desires. If one can stay away from Halal (permissible) food for Allah, it becomes easier to stay away from Haram (forbidden) sins.
Three Levels of Fasting
Imam Al-Ghazali described three grades of fasting:
- Ordinary Fasting: Abstaining from food, drink, and desires.
- Special Fasting: Keeping the ears, eyes, tongue, hands, and feet free from sin.
- Extra-special Fasting: Fasting of the heart from unworthy concerns and worldly thoughts, in total disregard of everything but Allah.
