The Revelation Period
The Quran was revealed piecemeal over 23 years. Whenever a verse was revealed, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would recite it to his companions, who would memorize it immediately. He also instructed scribes to write it down on parchment, bone, and stone.
The First Compilation (Abu Bakr RA)
After the Battle of Yamama, where many Huffaz (memorizers) were martyred, Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) suggested compiling the Quran into a single book to protect it. Abu Bakr (RA) commissioned Zayd ibn Thabit (RA) to verify every verse with two witnesses and written evidence before compiling the 'Mushaf'.
The Standardization (Uthman RA)
As Islam spread to non-Arab lands, dialectal differences in recitation appeared. Caliph Uthman (RA) unified the Ummah by standardizing the Quran based on the Quraishi dialect and the original manuscript of Abu Bakr. Copies were sent to major cities, and variations were burned. This ensured the text we have today is letter-for-letter identical to what was revealed.
