The Essence of Islam

Tawhid is the soul of Islam. It is the uncompromising belief that Allah is One, Unique, and without partner. Everything in the universe—from the spinning galaxies to the subatomic particles—testifies to the singular design of the Creator.

Categories of Tawhid

Scholars classically divide Tawhid into three aspects to aid understanding:

• Tawhid ar-Rububiyyah (Lordship): Believing that Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Owner of the universe. No one shares in His dominion.
• Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah (Worship): Directing all acts of worship—prayer, fear, hope, sacrifice—to Allah alone. This is the meaning of "La ilaha illa Allah."
• Tawhid al-Asma was-Sifat (Names & Attributes): Affirming the names and attributes of Allah (like The Most Merciful, The All-Hearing) as He has affirmed them for Himself, without comparing them to creation.

Impact on Life

A person who truly understands Tawhid fears no one but Allah and hopes in no one but Allah. It liberates the human mind from superstition and subservience to false powers.
